An independent Mac app, made by one person.

MacClearings is made by Chris Williams. It exists to answer the question a full disk eventually forces on every Mac owner: why is my disk full? macOS answers with a colored bar and a large gray block called System Data. Cleaners tend to answer with a big button. Neither says much about what’s actually there, or whether clearing it will help for longer than a day.
The common complaint about Mac cleaners is that they’re pointless: caches grow straight back, the numbers don’t match what macOS shows, and System Data stays a mystery. MacClearings is built to answer that complaint directly:
- Explain the numbers macOS shows. Break System Data and purgeable space into named items, and say plainly what can’t be measured without Full Disk Access.
- Explain every folder. A field guide says what a folder is, which app made it, whether it comes back and what happens without it.
- Report space that lasts. Measure cleaned places again after a day, a week and a month, and stop counting caches that refill as wins.
- Never delete anything. Move only what you’ve reviewed to the Trash, check it again first, and keep Undo for every cleanup.
How it’s made
MacClearings is a native Mac app, written in Swift with SwiftUI and AppKit, for macOS 15 and later. It reads the disk with the same low-level calls the system uses, so a full scan is fast and sizes are honest about clones, compression and hard links. The safety rules aren’t a promise in the copy; they’re enforced by a check that runs before every build and by tests that move real files to the real Trash and back.
There’s no account, no analytics and no tracking in the app. It’s sold directly, for a single price, with every update included. That’s the whole business model.
