  1. 1.0.0

    Coming at launch

    MacClearings 1.0

The first release. It isn't out yet; this is what it will include.

    Why is my disk full?

    • Overview: the whole disk in one ring, with what you keep in gray and what could go in color, by kind. Purgeable and free space are drawn apart.
    • Breakdown: starts from the volume numbers macOS reports and explains them, System Data included. Purgeable space, local snapshots and swap are explained as things macOS frees on its own. What can't be measured is shown as a number, with the reason.
    • Map: a zoomable sunburst or treemap of any folder, with the field guide built in: what a folder is, which app made it, whether it comes back and what happens without it.
    • Find: instant search across every scanned file, with size and date filters.

    Make room

    • Suggestions: 28 rules, each with a plain reason. Only things that are safe to lose and don't come straight back are checked for you.
    • Duplicates: compared by size, then the first and last 64 KB, then byte for byte. One copy is always kept; APFS clones and hard links aren't reported.
    • Applications: every app's real size including support files, uninstall with leftovers, leftovers from apps already gone, login items, and a live CPU and memory chart while an app runs.
    • Compress: smaller HEVC and HEIC copies of big videos and photos, saved next to the originals.

    What changed

    • History: every cleanup with Undo, and Put Back for single items.
    • Space that lasts: each cleaned place is measured again after a day, a week and a month, so you can see how much stayed free.
    • Snapshots of a scan to compare later.

    Everywhere

    • Nothing is ever deleted. Everything goes through one review list and then to the Trash, re-checked just before it moves.
    • A menu bar extra, drag a folder onto the window to scan it, optional Full Disk Access with live detection, light and dark appearance, Reduce Motion, VoiceOver labels on chart segments, and ⌘1 to ⌘9 for the views.
